The 2nd Annual Freak Show Festival was held on an unseasonably balmy October Saturday afternoon in downtown Austin, Texas.
No one waited for the night; the freaks came out ALL day for the unique outdoor festival that boasted a menagerie of freaky sideshow acts, music and circus performers. There were pole dancers, pin-up girls and greasers, a pyrotechnic and acrobatic circus, and a disturbing suspension art group all displaying their talent for the ones twisted enough to stop and watch for a minute. Rachel and Clint Simmons of 3 Way Events, owners and producers of The Freak Show, couldn’t have picked a better time or place to keep Austin REALLY weird!! Rockabilly/Psychobilly was the music de jour, the all female semi-swing inspired group “Danger*Cakes” opened the show, followed by local favorite Pickled Punks. Fans loved the Koffin Kats, Calabrese, Devil Doll, and the crowd went wild for the German headliners Mad Sin. As the hot day melted into night the Minor Mishap Marching Band put on a phenomenal show, tripping and skipping around the festival grounds with brass band music echoing behind them. Masses of entranced people followed the band as they played, almost like they were the pied pipers of the Freak Show. There was a little something for anyone who was even a little curious. Under the circus tent Pure Circus entertained with aerial acrobatics, jugglers, fire play and just a little inappropriate humor thanks to Xavier Frost.
Before the music kicked off Drew Edwards and Ragan Arndt brought all the most retro lovely ladies up on stage for the CherryBones Photography Pin-Up Girl Contest. The beautiful Rowena Arellano proved to win the judges hearts and become the First ever QUEEN of the Freak Show! She battled her way in true vintage pin-up pageant style against other contestants who were all judged equally on the authenticity of their outfit, poise and personality, and answers to interview questions. Jocelyn Bailey was our 1st runner –up and Elsa Rennie, a.k.a. Double down Dixie, was our 2nd runner-up. The prize packages included photo shoots for a magazine spread, sexy merchandise from local Austin shops such as Cindie’s Lingerie, top pageant crowns and sashes and lifetime VIP tickets to the Freak Show. CherryBones Photography sponsored the contest; Jme and Joe LaCombe put together an amazing booth with a macabre broken circus set for the pin-ups to pose in. Festivalgoers were so excited about the photo op and Jme and Joe were AWESOME enough to take photos all day for the folks who came out.
CherryBones Photography shot and provided the photos of our Queen. Rowena is an Austin local who has lived in the area her whole life. She loves the local art and music scene, especially all things rockabilly! There is definitely a specific look to Rowena; she has the charm and grace of the vintage pin-up girl from her sugar skulled dress to her flawless wide-eyed make-up. Add that to her sexy modern rockabilly edge with her tattoos and jet black jelly rolled hair and she was the clear choice to be our first ever Freak Show Queen! Rowena is currently a student of Esthiology at the Aveda Institute as well. If you ask her what makes her happy in life she beams when she talks about her kids. She is an amazing mother of 3 who tells you her children are her greatest gifts and accomplishments in her life. She loves to bring them into town for shows and festivals too. The vibrant life and culture of Austin is something she has always enjoyed and wants her kids to have all the same type of memories. We are so very proud to call the lovely Rowena Arellano the “Queen of the Freak Show 2011.”
The Freak Show Festival only comes crawling out from the rockabilly underbelly of Austin once a year, bringing the freakiest the town and country has to offer right to an otherwise typical Saturday afternoon downtown.
